How it works

Pace and speed say the same thing two ways. Speed is distance per hour, which is what a treadmill shows. Pace is time per mile or per kilometer, which is what runners and race results use.

To switch between them, divide 60 by the one you have. 60 divided by a speed in mph gives minutes per mile, and 60 divided by minutes per mile gives mph. Kilometers work the same way with km/h and minutes per km.

To switch between miles and kilometers, use 1 mile = 1.609344 km, which is exact by definition. A mile is the longer of the two, so a pace per mile is 1.609344 times the pace per km, and a speed in km/h is 1.609344 times the speed in mph.

The calculator does both steps from whichever number you type. Finish times are the pace multiplied by the race distance: 5 km, 10 km, 21.0975 km for a half marathon and 42.195 km for a marathon.

Worked example

Convert 7 mph to a pace.

  1. Minutes per mile: 60 ÷ 7 = 8.57 minutes.
  2. Seconds: 0.57 × 60 = 34, so the pace is 8:34 per mile.
  3. Minutes per km: 8.57 ÷ 1.609344 = 5.33 minutes, which is 5:20 per km.
  4. Speed in km/h: 7 × 1.609344 = 11.27 km/h.
  5. Marathon at that pace: 42.195 km × 5.326 minutes = 224.73 minutes, which is 3:44:44.

Going the other way, 8:00 per mile is 60 ÷ 8 = 7.5 mph, and 8 ÷ 1.609344 = 4.97 minutes, or 4:58 per km.

Questions

How do I convert mph to min per mile?

Divide 60 by the speed in mph. 6 mph is 60 ÷ 6 = 10 minutes, so 10:00 per mile. When the answer has a decimal, multiply the decimal part by 60 to get seconds: 7 mph is 60 ÷ 7 = 8.57 minutes, and 0.57 × 60 = 34 seconds, so 8:34 per mile. 8 mph is 7:30 per mile and 10 mph is 6:00.

How do I convert minutes per mile to mph?

Divide 60 by the pace in minutes. Write the seconds as a decimal first: 8:30 is 8.5 minutes, so 60 ÷ 8.5 = 7.06 mph. A 10:00 mile is 6 mph, a 9:00 mile is 6.67 mph, an 8:00 mile is 7.5 mph, a 7:00 mile is 8.57 mph and a 6:00 mile is 10 mph.

How do I convert km pace to mile pace?

Multiply the pace per km by 1.609344. 5:00 per km is 5 × 1.609344 = 8.05 minutes, which is 8:03 per mile. 4:00 per km is 6:26 per mile, 5:30 per km is 8:51 and 6:00 per km is 9:39. To go from mile pace to km pace, divide by 1.609344: 8:00 per mile is 4:58 per km.

What is a 10 minute mile in mph and per km?

A 10:00 mile is 6 mph, 6:13 per km and 9.7 km/h. Held for a whole race, that gives 31:04 for a 5K and 4:22:11 for a marathon.

An 8:00 mile is 7.5 mph and 4:58 per km, which gives 3:29:45 for a marathon. A 9:00 mile is 6.67 mph and 5:36 per km. A 12:00 mile is 5 mph and 7:27 per km.

How do I convert km/h (kph) to mph?

Divide by 1.609344. 10 km/h is 10 ÷ 1.609344 = 6.21 mph, 12 km/h is 7.46 mph and 16 km/h is 9.94 mph. To go from mph to km/h, multiply by 1.609344: 6 mph is 9.66 km/h.
