Pace quickens a little every split, so the second half ends up this much faster than the first and the total still matches your time.

The pace you need

A 6-hour marathon is 13:43 per mile or 8:31 per kilometer, the pace of a 3:00:00 half marathon held for twice the distance. It can be done with run-walk intervals: running 4 minutes at about 13:15 per mile (8:14 per km) and walking 1 minute at 16:06 per mile averages goal pace. Walking alone will not do it: at that walking pace the marathon takes 7:01:57.

What your watch should read at each marker for an even-paced race, and for a plan where the second half is 2% faster than the first. A 2% negative split means going through halfway in 3:01:49 and running the second half in 2:58:11.

How to pace a 6-hour marathon

  • Use the run-walk pattern from your long runs, and start it in the first mile.
  • Check the elapsed time at every fifth mile marker, because the pace on a watch jumps with each walk break: 1:08:39, 2:17:18, 3:25:58, 4:34:37, 5:43:16.
  • Halfway should come at 3:00:00. From 20 miles the last 6.2 miles take 1:25:23 at goal pace.

Want the numbers on your wrist? The pace band generator prints a strip with the elapsed time at every kilometer or mile.

Training paces for this goal

A 6-hour marathon scores a VDOT of about 22.7 on the scale from Jack Daniels’ Running Formula. These are the training paces that go with that score, using Daniels’ intensities: easy running at 59 to 74% of VO2 max, threshold at 88% and intervals at 97.5%.

SessionPer kmPer mileUsed for
Easy9:04 to 10:4114:35 to 17:11Most of your weekly running, including long runs
Marathon8:3213:44Steady segments of long runs
Threshold7:5712:48Tempo runs of about 20 minutes, or cruise intervals
Interval7:2111:50Repeats of 3 to 5 minutes with jog recovery

Train at the paces for the fitness you have now, not the goal. If your recent races are slower, use the VO2 max calculator with a recent result and move to these paces as your races improve.

We have no training plan for this exact goal: the closest is the 16-week 5-hour marathon training plan, built for a finish 1 hour faster, so its paces are harder than the ones above.

Race times that match this goal

The same VDOT gives these times at other distances. If you have run close to them recently, the goal is within reach on equal training. For the marathon, treat these as the minimum: many runners find the marathon slower than their shorter races predict, especially without long runs of 30 km or more in training.

Questions

What pace is a 6-hour marathon?

8:31 per kilometer or 13:43 per mile. Holding exactly 8:31 per km gets you to the finish in 5:59:22, and 13:43 per mile gets you there in 5:59:38.

What is the halfway split for a 6-hour marathon?

3:00:00 at even pace. With a 2% negative split, go through halfway in 3:01:49 and run the second half in 2:58:11.

What treadmill speed is 6-hour marathon pace?

7.0 km/h or 4.4 mph. A 1% incline is often suggested to make up for the lack of air resistance, but the study behind it tested speeds from 10.5 to 18 km/h (6.5 to 11.2 mph). At this slower pace air resistance matters less, so a level treadmill is fine.

What 5K time do I need for a 6-hour marathon?

About 38:34 on equal fitness, using Daniels’ VDOT tables. A half marathon of 2:57:03 is the better guide for the marathon.

How do I train for a 6-hour marathon?

Build most of your week from easy running at 9:04 to 10:41 per km, with one threshold session near 7:57 per km and a weekly long run. Run the goal pace itself in shorter sections so it feels familiar on race day.
